  • Description
  • The Cortez Angelfish is a large variety of angelfish found in the Eastern Pacific and Mexico. The Cortez Angel features a dark black body with yellow vertical stripes. As a juvenile, the Cortez Angel has a jet black body with bright electric blue and yellow vertical stripes.

The Cortez Angelfish is a very sought after angel in juvenile form due to its intense yellow and blue strips on its black body. Even though in adult form the Cortez Angel loses its flashy colors, it is still a very beautiful fish in adult form. Given that the Cortez Angel can grow up to 18 inches, it is recommended that you house it in an aquarium no smaller than 180 gallons.

Cortez Angels can be rather territorial and aggressive, so it is best to keep it as the only angelfish in your reef, unless your aquarium is extremely large. Also the Cortez Angelfish isn’t the best choice for a reef aquarium, since they have been known to pick at and nip at both hard and soft corals, as well as clams. Some people have had luck keeping Cortez Angelfish in reef aquariums, but it’s really up to the individual fish.

Like most Angelfish, the Cortez Angel is an omnivore, meaning that it needs to have a solid diet of such items as Spirulina, mysis shrimp, sponges and algae. With the right sized aquarium and diet, the Cortez Angelfish will definitely make a great addition to your tank.
