  • Description
  • The Flame Angelfish is by far one of the most popular angels in the aquarium hobby. Its popularity is mostly due to its smaller size of 5 inches and its flame red coloration. Being that the Flame Angelfish only reaches 5 inches, it can be kept in tanks as small as 55 gallons.

There are no differences in coloration between adult and juvenile Flame Angels, as there are no differences between males and females. The body of the Flame Angel is bright red with multiple black vertical stripes and some blue coloration on its fins.

Although the Flame Angelfish stays rather small, it is recommended that you keep only one dwarf angelfish in your tank since they can be very territorial and aggressive to similar species. Larger tanks should allow you to keep multiple dwarf angels together. Also while often kept in reef tanks, it’s not the best idea to do so. Flame Angels have been known to pick and nip at hard and soft corals, as well as clams. Although dwarf angels are considered more reef safe then their full sized cousins, it’s still a risk to do so.

The diet for a Flame Angel should consist of mysis shrimp, algae and Spirulina. Having a good amount of live rock is also beneficial to Flame Angels, since they will have places to hide if threatened and also algae to graze on during the day.
