  • Description
  • The Squareback Anthias is a very colorful and beautiful anthias. Squareback Anthias differ wildly in coloration from male to female. Females are solid orange in color, while males are more red. Squareback Anthias might also have a square pattern on the side of their body.

Squareback Anthias reach a maximum size of around 4 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons in size. Squareback Anthias are semi-aggressive fish and might be aggressive towards other anthias. Other fish, coral and inverts should not be bothered by the Squareback Anthias though, making them a great fish for reef tanks.

Squareback Anthias do very well when kept in small groups of one male and several females, or all females. With the lack of a male, the dominant female will turn male. Multiple male Squareback Anthias might be aggressive to each other in the same tank. Squareback Anthias are found in deeper waters, so it is important that you provide plenty of live rock for them to take covered from the bright lights found in our tanks.

Squareback Anthias are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp, high quality meaty frozen foods and high quality flake and pellet foods will keep your Squareback Anthias healthy. Squareback Anthias need to be fed at least two small meals a day to really thrive in your tank.

Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions about the Squareback Anthias and if it's the right fish for your tank.
