  • Description
  • The Black Ribbon Eel is a stunning black eel found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Black Ribbon Eels can be a very challenging species to keep and should only be attempted by experts.

Black Ribbon Eels can reach lengths over 36 inches, and need a tank of at least 75 gallons to be kept in. The Black Ribbon Eel has a long black body with a bright yellow line running along the top of its body. Like most eels, the Black Ribbon Eel will try to eat anything that in can fit in its mouth including small fish and inverts. For this reason it is with caution that you add one to a reef tank.

When working in a tank with a Black Ribbon Eel in it, make sure you are always aware of where the eel is. Black Ribbon Eels can provide a painful bite that might require medical attention of medical help. Also Black Ribbon Eels are excellent escape artists and should only be kept in a tank with a tight fitting lid. Any small hole will be used by a Black Ribbon Eel to get out of the tank. Also the Black Ribbon Eel will require a decent depth sand bed and rock to hide in.

Black Ribbon Eels are carnivores and need a diet rich in meaty foods. Food such as live ghost shrimp and krill will be good starting foods for a Black Ribbon Eel. Using a feeding tong with cut up pieces of fresh seafood are also a good way to feed your Black Ribbon Eel.
