  • Description
  • The Green Moray Eel (Gymnothorax funebris), also known as the Black Moray, is a fascinating and imposing creature found in the western Atlantic Ocean. Despite its name, this moray eel is not actually green. Its coloration is typically a dark gray or brown, but it is covered in a thick layer of yellow mucus that gives it a greenish tint. This mucus also serves to protect the eel from parasites and diseases. The Green Moray is the largest moray eel species in the Atlantic, reaching up to 8 feet in length and weighing up to 65 pounds. Its elongated body and powerful jaws make it a formidable predator in its habitat.

Green Moray Eels are typically found in coral reefs, rocky crevices, and mangrove forests. They are nocturnal hunters, emerging from their hiding places at night to prey on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Their hunting strategy often involves ambushing their prey, using their powerful jaws to deliver a swift and deadly bite. While not typically aggressive towards humans, Green Moray Eels can deliver a painful bite if provoked. Their size and sharp teeth make them a creature to be respected and observed from a safe distance.
