  • Description
  • Snowflake Eels are one of the only moray eels that can easily be kept in a reef tank. Snowflake Eels are beautiful eels with white bodies with lots of thick black vertical stripes going down the length of their body. Snowflake Moray Eels also have lots of yellow spots throughout their whole body as well.

Snowflake Eels can grow to over 28 inches in captivity and will need to be housed in a tank that is at least 55 gallons in size. Snowflake Eels tend to be very peaceful eels while they are younger. As a Snowflake Eel gets older, they might start to eat smaller fish though. Snowflake Eels will also try to eat any inverts that it can catch and fit its mouth. Snowflake Eels have terrible eye sight, so they can mistake your hand for food and bite you. Although they have more rounded teeth meant for crushing inverts, instead of razor sharp teeth like other Morays, Snowflake Eel bites can still hurt.

Snowflake Eels are somewhat reef safe, but can knock over coral and rock work and will eat some inverts and smaller fish. So please proceed with caution if you want to add a Snowflake Eel to your fully stocked reef tank.

Snowflake Eels are carnivores and need a diet that is rich with meaty foods. Foods such as frozen and fresh high quality seafood cut into chunks that will fit into its mouth are great for Snowflake Eels. Also silversides provide great nutrition for Snowflake Eels. Feeding tongs are suggested to put the food near where the eel is to entice eating.

Snowflake Eels require a lot of live rock for them to hide and make caves in. An eel with no hiding places will quickly fall into bad health. Snowflake Eels are also escape artists and require a tank with a tight fitting hood. Also there needs to be no holes large enough for the eel to fit through or it will escape. Snowflake Eels can get out of holes much smaller than their bodies, so be very thorough when checking for holes.
