  • Description
  • The Tessalata Eel is one of the most striking of all the moray eels. Tessalata Eels have a long light colored body with many dense black honeycomb markings.

Tessalata Moray Eels can reach sizes in excess of 70 inches, and need a tank that is at least 180 gallons in size. Tessalata Eels need to be kept in tanks with lots of live rock that in can hide in and form caves out of. Without a cave, Tessalata Eels can become very unhealthy. Tessalata Eels are amazing escape artists and need a tank with a tight fitting lid, or they will escape. Tessalata Eels can fit through holes that are much smaller than their bodies, so be very observant when checking your tank for escape routes before adding a Tessalata Eel.

Tessalata Eels can be kept in reef tanks, but they will eat smaller fish, inverts and have the ability to knock over corals with their large long bodies. Tessalata Eels have extremely sharp teeth and can inflict life threatening bites if you get bitten by one. You need to practice extremely caution any time you are working in a tank housing a Tessalata Moray Eel. Tessalata Eels have very bad eyesight and might mistake your hand for a meal.

Tessalata Eels are carnivores and require a diet very rich in meaty foods. Foods like silversides and chunks of fresh or frozen high quality sea food that can fit in its mouth are great foods for Tessalata Eels. Using feeding tongs to get the food near the Tessalata Eels mouth are the best way to feed it.
