  • The Y-bar moray eel (Gymnothorax ypsilon) is a fascinating deep-water species found in the Pacific Ocean. It is easily recognizable by the distinctive Y-shaped markings that adorn its light brown body. These markings, which extend onto the fins, are typically a darker brown color, creating a striking contrast against the eel's lighter background. Y-bar moray eels are relatively slender compared to other moray species, and their dorsal fin originates before the gill opening, a unique characteristic that sets them apart.

    These elusive creatures are predominantly found in the waters surrounding southern Japan and the Hawaiian Islands, inhabiting depths of up to 185 meters (607 feet). As nocturnal predators, they spend their days hiding in crevices and caves, emerging at night to hunt for small fish and invertebrates. While little is known about their behavior in the wild, Y-bar moray eels are relatively rare and are considered a prized find for divers and underwater photographers. Despite their elusive nature, they play an important role in maintaining the balance of their deep-sea ecosystem.
