  • Description
  • The Yellow Canary Eel, also known as the Golden Moray Eel or Banana Eel (due to a color variation), is a stunning inhabitant of the Atlantic Ocean. Scientifically classified as Gymnothorax miliaris, this eel is prized for its vibrant coloration and can be a captivating addition to a large saltwater aquarium – though not for the faint of heart.

Sporting a body that can reach up to two feet in length, the Yellow Canary Eel has an elongated, snake-like form. Unlike most fish, they lack pelvic and pectoral fins, giving them a unique wiggling motion as they propel themselves through the water. True to its name, the most sought-after variation of this eel boasts a brilliant yellow body, often likened to a canary or a ripe banana. However, these eels can also exhibit a range of other colorations depending on their geographic location. Some may be a golden yellow with black spots, while others have a dark brown base scattered with tiny white speckles, or a mottled yellowish-brown pattern.

Despite their captivating looks, Yellow Canary Eels are carnivores and should be approached with caution. Their eyesight is not the greatest, and they can deliver a powerful bite – even mistaking fingers for food. If you plan on keeping one as a pet, feeding with tongs is highly recommended to avoid any unpleasant encounters. Fortunately, these eels are generally hardy and adapt well to captivity, as long as their tank is spacious and has a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape attempts (they are notorious for being escape artists!). With proper care, including regular water changes and a diet of meaty foods like shrimp and fish, the Yellow Canary Eel can grace your aquarium for many years to come.
