Description
The Clown Grouper is a very colorful and interesting looking smaller grouper. Clown Groupers have a mostly deep tan to brown body with strong black bars and many white spots.

Clown Groupers reach a maximum adult size of around 14 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 200 gallons. Clown Groupers are semi-aggressive fish and might bother smaller fish and some inverts, but not corals. For this reason, you must proceed with caution if adding a Clown Grouper to your reef tank.

Clown Groupers will really do best in a large fish only tank with other large peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Clown Groupers are hard to keep since they can release toxins into the water if they are too stressed by other fish. In nature this is a deterrent, but can cause lots of issues in aquariums.

Clown Groupers are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp as well as high quality meaty frozen foods are good for small juvenile Clown Groupers. As your Clown Grouper matures, it will need more substantial foods like chunks of fresh seafood. These foods should keep your Clown Grouper healthy and growing. Please only attempt this species if you are a very advanced aquarist or have had experience with a Clown Grouper before.
