  • Description
  • The fish referred to as the Costa Rican Hogfish is scientifically known as Bodianus diplotaenia, commonly called the Mexican Hogfish. It's a species of wrasse found in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This fish exhibits color and pattern variations depending on its life stage, with juveniles and initial phase adults displaying reddish to yellowish hues and dark stripes, while terminal phase males showcase bluish-green bodies with brown heads.

These hogfish inhabit rocky or coral areas, and are also found on sandy bottoms and where marine plants are abundant. They are carnivorous, feeding on a variety of invertebrates like crabs, brittle stars, mollusks, and sea urchins. In aquariums, they require ample space due to their potential size and dietary needs, and they are generally not considered reef safe due to their predation on invertebrates. Their habitat range stretches from the Gulf of California down to Chile, including various islands in the Eastern Pacific.
