  • The Zebra Flounder is a very unique and rarely seen flounder in home aquariums. Zebra Flounders have a mostly tan to brown body with strong white stripes along it. Like other flounders, the Zebra Flounder has a flat body.

    Zebra Flounders reach a maximum adult size of around 6 inches and needs to be kept in tanks that are at least 75 gallons. Zebra Flounders are aggressive fish and will go after smaller or inverts that get too close to it. For this reason, the Zebra Flounder is a bad choice to add to reef tanks.

    Zebra Flounders need to be kept in tanks that have a deep sand bed for them to burrow in. The substrate cannot be too coarse or the belly of the Zebra Flounder can be scratched which could lead to infections and disease. Zebra Flounders will burrow their bodies completely in the sand just leaving their eyes exposed waiting for a meal to come by. Without a sand bed, the Zebra Flounder will become stressed and more than likely ill. Zebra Flounders are tough to keep, so please only try this species if you have experience with the species or are an expert aquarist.

    Zebra Flounders are carnivores and require a diet that is rich in meaty foods. Foods like mysis and brine shrimp, high quality meaty frozen foods and small chunks of fresh seafood will keep your Zebra Flounder healthy and happy.
