  • Description
  • The Stars and Stripes Puffer is one of the most stunning pufferfish available for home aquariums. Stars and Stripes Puffers have a tan body with many small white spots that look like stars on a flag. The lower half of its body is striped, hence its name.

Stars and Stripes Puffers can grow up to 18 inches and need an aquarium that is at least 180 gallons in size. Stars and Stripes Puffer are not too aggressive of fish, but should only be kept with larger semi-aggressive fish. Stars and Stripes Puffers can bother smaller fish sometimes.

Stars and Stripes Puffers are not considered reef safe fish because they might nip at some corals and will also eat any inverts they can find. Stars and Stripes Puffers really do the best in larger FOWLR tanks. Stars and Stripes Puffers are known for having great personalities, and often turn more into a family pet than the typical fish.

When startled Stars and Stripes Puffers can inflate their body to well over two times their normal size. They tend to do this when being caught in nets, so it’s advised that you transfer Stars and Stripes Puffers in acrylic containers. Also it is advised to not try to trigger this behavior for fun, since it can be very stressful on the fish.

Stars and Stripes Puffers have more beak like teeth, so feeding them hard shelled inverts will help keep their teeth in check. Since Stars and Stripes Puffers are carnivores, they need a diet rich in meaty foods like chunks of high quality frozen and fresh seafood.
