  • Description
  • The Achilles Tang is one of the most beautiful and prized of all the surgeonfish. Achilles Tangs have a round black body with a very distinct orange spot and orange tail. Achilles Tangs also have their fins lined in brilliant electric blue.

Achilles Tangs reach a fully mature size of around 9 inches and require a tank that is at least 180 gallons. Achilles Tangs are extremely strong swimmers and need a tank that is long and has tons of swimming room. Achilles Tangs are found in surge zones in Hawaii, so it is extremely important that you have a very high water flow rate in your tank.

Achilles Tangs are 100% reef safe fish and will not bother other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. There will be issues if you try to keep multiple tangs together in the same tank. Tangs are aggressive to other tangs, Achilles Tangs are no exception. Achilles Tangs will be overly aggressive to other Acanthurus tangs as well. If you want to keep multiple tangs together, it is suggested that you keep them in large tanks and try to introduce them at the same time.

Achilles Tangs are known as ich magnets, and it is rare to receive an Achilles Tang that is 100% ich free. For this reason is it a must to quarantine Achilles Tangs before adding them to your display tank. Also once your Achilles Tang is ich free, adding additives to their food like selcon and garlic will help keep their immune system strong and ward off disease.

Achilles Tangs are herbivores and require a diet rich in green foods. Foods such as nori, algae sheets, high quality pellet and flake foods, spirulina and mysis shrimp will help your Achilles Tang grow and thrive.

  • User ReviewsSuch a great fish. Had one in our last tank, which had a ton of tangs. It had some issues with our Achilles Hybrid, but after some time they really got along great together.Peter (Llano) - 9/8/2021 12:44:25 PM
