  • Description
  • The Crosshatch Triggerfish(Xanthicthys mento) is definitely one of the most beautiful and sought after of all the triggers. This triggerfish can live in extremely deep water, so it is certainly more rare than most triggers in the aquarium trade.

Crosshatch Triggerfish do extremely well in pairs The male has much brighter coloration than the female with more vibrant reds and yellows. Crosshatch Triggers reach a maximum size of around 11 inches and need to be housed in a tank that is at least 200 gallons. A 400 or larger tank is recommended if keeping a pair.

Crosshatch Triggers are generally peaceful fish. They may harass smaller fish and some invertebrates, but for the most part are model citizens. Crosshatch Triggerfish are also one of the rare triggers that can be kept in a reef tank. Crosshatch Triggerfish also make interesting grunting noises. Crosshatch Triggers have very strong and large teeth and may scratch some acrylic tanks.

Crosshatch Triggerfish do best in tanks that have lots of swimming room and live rock for them to hide in if they become spooked or nervous. They have been known to move rocks, so make sure your rock structure is rather stable before adding a Crosshatch Triggerfish.

Crosshatch Triggers are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods. Foods such as mysis shrimp, krill and small pieces of quality seafood like squid, clams, shrimp and fish will really help your Crosshatch Triggerfish grow and thrive.
