  • The Horseshoe Crab is a stunning and very unique invert. Horseshoe Crabs resemble something that came out of the prehistoric age and are truly not even crabs. Horseshoe Crabs have a flat body that can vary from tan to brown. They have a very long spine coming out of the rear of their body as well.

    Horseshoe Crabs reach a maximum adult size of around 24 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 200 gallons in size. Horseshoe Crabs are peaceful creatures and shouldn't bother other inverts, coral or fish in your tank. When Horseshoe Crabs get large they will knock over corals and will attack some inverts in your tank. So adding a juvenile Horseshoe Crab to a reef tank is fine, but as they get larger you might need to find them a new home.

    Horseshoe Crabs should be placed in a large tank with a decent depth sand bed. They will often burrow in the sand looking for small inverts to eat. Horseshoe Crabs will also keep your sand bed oxygenated with their burrowing.

    Horseshoe Crabs are carnivores and will spend the bulk of their lives looking for leftover foods in your tank. This makes them a great addition to a large tank's clean up crew. If you would like to supplement their diet, you can add foods like small pieces of fresh seafood to the tank.
