  • Description
  • The Black Longspine Urchin is a unique and very interesting urchin. Black Longspine Urchins have very long and sharp spines that they use to protect themselves from aggressive fish.

Black Longspine Urchins reach a maximum size of around 8 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons in size. Black Longspine Urchins are peaceful inverts and shouldn't bother other fish, coral or inverts in your tank. This makes the Black Longspine Urchin a great addition to reef tanks. Black Longspine Urchin are also great members of a clean up crew for fish only tanks with aggressive fish like triggers and puffers. The Black Longspine Urchins spines will keep the aggressive fish away and they will be able to clean your tank.

Black Longspine Urchins should not be used in tanks that are made out of soft acrylic. Not only can their spines scratch the acrylic, but their mouths can also scratch the acrylic as well. Black Longspine Urchins will spend most of their days hidden in your rock work and will come out at night to eat algae off of the rocks.

Black Longspine Urchins are herbivores and require a diet that is rich in green foods. Black Longspine Urchins will get most of their nutritional needs through grazing on algae in the tank, but you can supplement their diet with nori or marine algae sheets.
