  • Description
  • The Royal Urchin is a regal looking urchin and can be one of the best additions to your clean up crew. Royal Urchins get their name from their commonly seen deep blue color and row of spines that resemble a crown.

Royal Urchins can reach a fully grown adult size of around 3 inches and need to be kept in a tank that is at least 29 gallons. Royal Urchins are very peaceful creatures and will not bother other inverts, coral or fish. Royal Urchins need a tank that has lot of live rock for them to hide in during the days, when at night they will emerge and eat algae around the tank. Royal Urchins have very powerful mouths and could potentially damage softer acrylic tanks.

Royal Urchins are reef safe urchins and will only eat various types of algae found on your live rock, substrate, equipment and glass. They are extremely good algae eaters and will plow through most types of algae. Since they are herbivores, they need a diet very rich in green foods. If there isn’t enough algae in your tank to keep your Royal Urchin healthy, you can try to substitute algae sheets.

Royal Urchins are very sensitive to the quality of your water. If your water parameters are a little bit off, you will start to see some of the Royal Urchins spines start to fall off. If this is the case, please take quick action to improve water quality.

Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions about the Royal Urchin and if it’s the right urchin for your tank.
